No SURPRISES ACT OF 2022

What is it?

The No Surprises Act, part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, forbids patients from receiving surprise medical bills when seeking emergency services or certain services from out-of-network providers at in-network facilities.

  • Holds patients liable for their regular in-network cost-sharing amount only.
  • Allows providers and insurance companies to negotiate reimbursement separately including through an independent dispute resolution process.
  • Requires providers and health plans to help patients access accurate healthcare cost information.

How does it affect you?

I can provide you at your request a good faith estimate of what your total therapy services may end up costing you, at any point in your work with me whether you use your insurance services with me or not.

What is a "Good Faith Estimate"?

A “Good Faith Estimate” is a document that explains how much your medical and mental health care will cost.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.

You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.

DISCLAIMERS:

  • There may be additional items or services I may recommend as part of the course of care that must be scheduled or requested separately and are not reflected in the good faith estimate; and
  • The good faith estimate is only an estimate and actual items, services, or charges may differ from the good faith estimate; and
  • Every patient has the right to initiate a patient-provider dispute resolution process if the actual billed charges substantially exceed the expected charges included in the good faith estimate. Please direct any complaints about fees to me directly in writing to initiate the dispute resolution process. The initiation of a patient-provider dispute resolution process will not adversely affect the quality of health care services furnished to the patient; and
  • The good faith estimate is not a contract and does not require the uninsured (or self-pay) individual to obtain the items or services from any of the providers or facilities identified in the good faith estimate.
